Book Description: "Contemplative practices and pedagogy in the classroom" is an open-access, evolving resource that seeks to engage the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—in teaching and learning. Co-created at Concordia’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, it shares insights, reflections, and practices that foster presence, connection, and care in both secular and spiritual contexts. Designed with and for educators, students, and practitioners, it invites exploration of intersections with Indigenous knowledges, trauma-informed approaches, and culturally relevant pedagogy—whether read cover to cover or as a non-linear contemplative journey.

Book Description

In an increasingly fractured world, how can educators and students cultivate deeper, more connected ways of learning? Contemplative practices and pedagogy in the classroom is an approach that engages the ‘whole person’—mind, body, and spirit—in the teaching and learning process. These approaches orient us towards introspection, presence, and connection, countering the dominant culture of speed and isolation in today’s world.

At Concordia, a growing community of faculty, staff and students have been exploring CP&P for the past three years. Our activities focus on creating spaces for conversation, experimentation and shared learning around contemplative approaches in both secular and spiritual contexts.

Together with this community, the Centre for Teaching and Learning co-created an open-access resource – a living, experimental document–intended to share insights, reflections and practices. It is free and open for anyone to use and adapt with intentionality and care.

This resource is intended for anyone interested in integrating CP&P into their work while questioning crucial intersections with Indigenous knowledges, trauma-informed, and culturally- appreciative and relevant approaches. You can read it front to back as a book, or take a non-linear, ‘contemplative’ journey. We invite you to explore, adapt, and contribute to this evolving resource.
