Basics of Images with

Pressbooks

Resize and prepare images before upload. The upload limit is 2MB per image and 20 MB for other content. Accepted file types include JPG, PNG, and SVG.

Resize images

Imagereizer allows you to resize your images before uploading. If your Pressbooks are meant to have a web and digital PDF version for printing, it is recommended that the images be centred and that the image size be no more than 500 pixels wide and 600 pixels high.

How to add images?

Upload images using the Media Library. Add Media using the Visual text editor > Under the Upload Files tab, drop select files. Once uploaded into the Media Library, you can select the image to add alt text, adjust the title, and provide attribution information. Once your selected image is ready, insert it into the Chapter.

Accessibility matters

Alternative Text (alt text) appears as helpful short descriptions of non-decorative images. Essential to digital accessibility, alt text benefits blind and low-vision readers who rely on screen readers to understand non-text content, including diagrams and graphics. Alt text is also helpful when an image does not appear on the page because of technical or Internet connection problems.

Add alt text

You can alter certain aspects of uploaded images in your Media Library by selecting the Edit Media option for a particular file and then selecting the Edit Image option to add alt text.

Copyright matters

Check the licence details for all third-party content. The author and project lead are responsible for ensuring that their Open-Textbook project does not infringe on any third party’s proprietary or intellectual property rights. Add image captions with attributions statements by selecting Edit Media, choosing a particular file, and then selecting the Edit Image option to add a caption.

Images example

Creating the Modern: Intersections of Art & Society in the Nineteenth Century by Loren Lerner and Karine Antaki is a visually rich open textbook with alt-text and captions that include copyright information.
